More about Boldy's Mother

In the spring of 2019, Boldy's mother gives birth to her first litter of pups. In the video bellow we can see she is breastfeeding (from the outline of her breasts). She appears to be no more than a year old. This is the age when female jackals become fertile.

Her pups never appear before camera. Again from the outline of her breasts we can assume they were 5 or 6.

Who was their dad? Jackals are monogamous, so the parents stay together for life unless one of them is killed or dies from other causes. We have to wait for 3 long months before the father finally comes to the bait site on the 10 August 2019.

Pic.1 The Parents

Pic.1 The father is on the left in the picture, with the mother on the right. The picture shows a well-known fact: male and female jackals look very much alike. Still, the build of the male is more massive, particularly in the chest and neck. The mother is slenderer. Her stomach is flatter since she had stopped suckling at least a month before. Faint traces of a slightly hanging milk bag can be seen.

The next post will be less about physical traits and more about affection, exception and a kiss.

Disclosure: These jackal stories I know from my father. In the course of his seven seasons of fieldwork, he has been in daily contact with his eminent colleague and close friend Prof. Nikolai Spassov of the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The data my father collected at the Danube camp has been analysed by them both. The responsibility for what is published in this blog remains fully mine.
